Are You a Creator or a Cultivator?
There are two types of creative people in any creative industry: Creators and Cultivators. Creators are good at the nuts and bolts of creating and producing work. Cultivators are good at organizing people, organizing resources, and planning how things will play out.
In the music industry, creators can be anything from an audio engineer to a musician. They’re people who love to make things and often devote a lot of their time to crafting music and/or making beats. Cultivators in the music industry are producers or general overseers, people who have a knack for organization, a talent for communication and for rallying the troops.
When starting a career you should always try and give yourself the best head start possible. Really think about which one of these groups you fit into and assess your natural skills and abilities. That way you can focus on developing the skills and awareness you need to make the most of your natural talents and inclinations and position yourself in the best possible manner when it comes to getting the job you want.
Many great film and music cultivators have resurrected the careers of creators. Think about what Rick Rubin has done for people like The Beastie Boys, Tom Jones, and Johnny Cash? Or what Robert Evans has done for people like Francis Ford Coppola. At a certain point the cultivators take over and sculpt the creator as an individual. They assist them in discovering the direction that they should go in. Then, the creator takes over and finishes the journey.
All creative fields need both of these types of people. Every field needs both micro and macro thinkers. Without creators nothing would get made, and without cultivators it would be ten times harder to complete projects. The two types of individuals are needed within each industry. The only real question remaining is…
Which one are you?
